LONELY WHVLE and the Cold Beauty of IN MY DREAMS

LONELY-WHVLE-INMYDREAMS

Artist: LONELY WHVLE
Album: IN MY DREAMS

What we have here are ghostly female vocals chanting above 16th and 32nd-note trap high hats and synth bass from the abyss.

There are sparkly bells, drowned by droning synthesizers, EDM beat drops, and electronic grooves reminiscent of (a more sophisticated) t.A.T.u. given a modern 2019 spin. That’s an unfair comparison though, because this music is more transcendent.

LONELY WHVLE (pronounced “whale,” of course) are from Russia, where the cold nights inspire this cold, but beautiful synthwave music, which is at times gloomy, but always exposing intricate melodies and solid song construction.

One example, “TO LIVE FOREVER,” is an ascending chant that begins with the fragile female vocalist intoning: “I want to be immortal, like a god in the sky / I want to be a silk flower, like I’m never gonna die.” The rest is a fever dream of need and aspiration, despair and hope that keeps climbing till it climaxes then fizzles out.

The third track, “SIREN’S CALL,” is done in the same vein: female ooh-ing and aah-ing over a chunky trap beat and interweaving melodic synth lines.

Their music is pretty, but emotionally intense. Use this for gloomy days to get you out of your funk. Some call this music Witch House. Some call it coldwave. Whatever you call it, listen to it and you will be rewarded.
